Radiator Installation
Radiator Installation is Harder Than You Think

There are plenty of videos and articles available online that promise a quick guide to replacing your radiator. It’s not uncommon to see tips for installing a radiator in under an hour, making it seem like an easy task. However, while the process may seem straightforward, it is more difficult than you think.

About your radiator The radiator keeps your car’s cooling system operating efficiently. It is very fragile and may get clogged or start to leak over time. There are a lot of parts to consider if your cooling system is underperforming. The radiator may be the source of your trouble, but the issue could also be from the hose, clamps, or a clog. How to replace a radiator

The following steps provide a general outline for changing out your radiator. However, it is important to remember that this process may be slightly different for your vehicle. It is also easy to run into problems or hit a snag if you do not work with radiators often.

  • Start with your engine cold.

  • Remove the radiator cap. There may be some pressure release here.

  • Turn the cap counterclockwise while pushing down, then lift it from the radiator.

  • Take out the lower shield mounting bolts and shielding to access the bottom of the radiator.

  • Find the drain plug for the radiator and loosen it.

  • Place a catch basin under the drain to collect coolant. This can be recycled later.

  • Wait until the coolant has drained completely.

  • Remove mounting bolts or clips on the air intake.

  • Remove the plastic fascia on the radiator.

  • Lift the engine bay cover.

  • Move the air intake out of the way.

  • Remove the mounting bolts on the coolant reservoir.

  • Take out the coolant overflow tube, which may be stuck.

  • Remove the coolant reservoir.

  • Disconnect the electrical connector for the cooling fan.

  • Loosen the clamp on the upper radiator hose.

  • Twist the hose to remove it.

  • Remove mounting bolts from the cooling fan.

  • Take the fan and housing out gently.

  • Loosen the two automatic transmission cooler lines and remove them from the radiator.

  • Remove the radiator mounting bolts.

  • Remove the air condition condenser by moving the radiator forward.

  • Take out the lower radiator hose with a hose clamp removal tool.

  • Catch any coolant in a fluid catch basin.

  • Lift the radiator out gently.

  • Match the new radiator up with the old one. Transfer parts from the old radiator to the new one without damaging the radiator core.

  • Put the new radiator in by reversing the steps above.

  • Add coolant to the system and start the engine. Keep adding coolant while the engine warms until the thermostat opens.

  • Put the radiator cap back on and check for leaks.

  • Check your temperature gauge while driving to ensure the radiator is not overheating.

  • As you can see, there are quite a few steps involved in the process. You will also require special tools to complete the installation. Missing any step or finding an issue along the way can make it difficult to reinstall your radiator and get your car running properly again. If you are familiar with working on cars though, this process may not be too difficult.
